The Minister of Health has approved changes to the Psychologists Regulation under the Health Professions Act (HPA) which bring school psychologists under the regulation of the College of Psychologists of BC (CPBC). The changes remove the exemption for non-registrant use of the title “school psychologist” and require all school psychologists to be registrants of CPBC after May 1, 2024. Only registrants of the College of Psychologists of British Columbia may make a psychology diagnosis or a school psychology diagnosis after May 1, 2024. To be eligible for the expedited application process for BCASP members to become regulated by CPBC, one must be a member of BCASP by August 1, 2023; otherwise, individuals will need to apply directly to CPBC. All BCASP members must complete an application to CPBC before November 1, 2023.
I have not received an invitation to the application portal for the College of Psychologists of British Columbia (CPBC). How do I proceed?
Please go to the CPBC website to begin the application process. If you have any difficulty starting or completing the application, follow up with CPBC. BCASP does not start the application process for you. It is sole responsibility of individual members to begin and complete their application to CPBC.
How do I start my application to CPBC?
You begin the application by going to the CPBC website and selecting the BCASP Certified application. If you encounter any difficulties, follow up with CPBC. Click Here to Access the CPBC Application
When do the applications need to be completed by?
All BCASP certified members need to have their application form completed and paid for by November 1, 2023.
What happens if I do not complete an application before November 1, 2023?
After that date, no one will be eligible for the expedited process for BCASP members. All individuals wanting to be a licensed school psychologist will have to complete the CPBC School Psychologist application, complete additional exams, and have their documentation reviewed and vetted by CPBC. BCASP recommends that any member planning on becoming a licensed school psychologist (registrant of CPBC) complete their application before November 1, 2023.
Who should I contact if I have questions about my application to CPBC?
Any questions about your application need to be directed to CPBC.
What are the implications to my employment after May 1, 2024 if I do not become a licensed school psychologist under CPBC?
After May 1, 2024, the exemption clause allowing the use of title (school psychologist) will be removed. Moving forward, only licensed school psychologists (registrants of CPBC) will be able to use title and be employed as school psychologists. As well, there will be restricted activities (including making school psychology diagnoses) that will be limited to registrants of CPBC.
